Small Bins, Big Impact: Leveling Up Our Creation Care
The “Why” Behind the Effort
When the Green Team formed last fall, they started with a simple but profound question: “Where’s one small place we can start? How can we better honor God’s creation right here, right now?” While Brecksville UMC has been recycling for over 20 years, we realized that being “green” shouldn’t be a secret! Our low-profile bins have served us well, but sometimes go unnoticed. To truly make an impact, it’s time for a visible, vibrant upgrade.
Science Meets Stewardship
Through research and tips from the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District, the team learned that effective recycling isn’t just about having a bin—it’s about visibility. Height, color, and clear signage are the keys to helping people sort correctly.
We’ve identified a sleek, “three-stream” system (landfill, paper, and plastic/cans) perfectly sized for our high-traffic areas: Fellowship Hall, The Parlor, and Room 301.
A Community Effort
This project is a beautiful example of our church family working together:
- The Green Team secured a $200 grant through the Ohio Episcopal Area Green Church Movement and contributed personal donations.
- The United Women in Faith stepped up to sponsor the project when the church staff selected it as their annual “staff appreciation” chosen cause.
- The Sew4Good Group has handcrafted beautiful car litter bags and plastic bag holders to help us reach the finish line!
How You Can Help
We are almost there, but we need your help to cover the final costs of these new stations.
Visit us in the Lobby on April 19 and 26! In exchange for a donation of any size, you can take home a handmade Sew4Good item (while supplies last) to help you stay green on the go.
Can’t make it to the lobby? You can donate online right now. Simply click the button below to donate online – or drop your gift in the offering plate (make sure to mark it “Green Team Recycling Project.”)
