Sunday Morning: A Time to Love Our Neighbors
This summer, we’re doing something a little different on a Sunday morning—and we’re opening our doors wide to the entire community.
On Sunday, August 2, the Vitalant Blood Mobile will be right here in our parking lot. Sunday mornings are traditionally a time for reflection, gratitude, and community. What better way to put our values into action than by literally rolling up our sleeves to give the gift of life? Loving our neighbors means showing up for them when they need it most, and right now, local patients are counting on us to help beat the critical summer blood shortage.
Whether you’re a regular donor or this is your very first time, your Sunday morning donation can save up to three lives right here in our area. Bring a friend, bring a neighbor, and let’s make a massive difference together before lunchtime.
What to know about donating blood
What to Know About Donating Blood (FAQs)
Am I eligible to donate?
Most people are! The basic requirements are that you must be at least 16 years old (with a signed parental consent form) or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good general health. Read more.
Can I donate if I take prescription medications?
Yes, in most cases. Taking routine medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid issues, or diabetes (including insulin) does not disqualify you from donating. Just make sure to bring a list of your medications to your appointment so the Vitalant staff can verify them.
Am I too old to give?
There’s no age cap for healthy adults, and plenty of people in their 70s and above donate regularly. In fact, studies show older donors tend to have fewer side effects like dizziness or lightheadedness than younger donors.
What if I recently got a tattoo or piercing?
You can still donate! As long as your tattoo or piercing was performed in a state-regulated shop using sterile, single-use needles, there is no waiting period. (Note: A few states do not regulate tattoo shops; if you got your tattoo there, Vitalant will ask you to wait 3 months). Learn more here.
How long does it take?
The actual blood draw takes only about 10 minutes. However, the entire process—including checking in, a quick mini-physical, and sitting down for a snack and drink afterward—takes about 45 to 60 minutes total. It’s a quick hour out of your Sunday that can save up to three lives!
Does it hurt?
You will feel a brief, quick pinch when the needle is inserted, but after that, you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. Most donors spend the time chatting with the staff, browsing their phones, or just relaxing.
What should I do to prepare for Sunday morning?
To ensure you have a great donation experience, follow these three simple steps:
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of your donation.
- Eat a good breakfast: Eat a healthy meal before you arrive (avoiding fatty foods).
- Bring your ID: Vitalant requires a photo ID or a document with your full name and date of birth.
Still unsure if you can donate? If you have a specific medical condition, a history of recent international travel, or a question not covered here, you can call Vitalant’s eligibility line directly at 877-258-4825 to find out instantly!
